5 Backlist Books Moving to My Short List

#FiveOnFriday 1-23-16

#FiveOnFriday is an original, weekly feature on NightOwlReader.com.  Each week I talk about favorite books, anticipated reads, and other bookish topics.  Enjoy!

I’m pretty sure we all have a To Be Read (TBR) list that is a mile long. At some point, we either need to try tackling it or cut our losses. Since I would like to actually read the 100+ books waiting for me to get to them (on my Kindle and on my bookshelf), I have decided to make a shortened “Next Reads” list.  All of these books have been recommended by friends recently–some by more than one friend–so they are going to be the first I plan to read.  I love getting recommendations from friends!

I have reading obligations until the first week in February, but after that, I am planning a book nerd free-for-all.

So, here are my Top 5 Backlist (meaning not ‘new releases’) Books that will be on the top of my reading pile:

1) On the Island by Tracy Garvis Graves

Release Date:  August 16th 2012

Referred by: Amy at Foxy Blogs

I think I may be the only indie romance reader who has not read this book. Amy says that it is a top favorite of hers and that I must read it immediately. I plan to do just that the first chance I get.

2) Like Gravity by Julie Johnson

Like Gravity[/ezcol_1third] [ezcol_2third_end]

Release Date: January 18th 2015

Referred by: Angela at Feeding My Addiction Book Blog

I had honestly never heard of this book or this author until Angela recommended it.  She says that all of Julie Johnson’s books are excellent, and they have crazy-high ratings on Goodreads.  So, I am starting with this one and plan to work my way down the list.

3) The Virgin Romance Novelist

Release Date:April 2nd 2015

Referred by: My Goodreads friend, Leslie

When I made a #FiveOnFriday list of Romances That Made Me Laugh Out Loud, Leslie left a comment telling me that I had to read this book.  I read my first Meghan Quinn romantic comedy, The Mother Road, last week and just about died from laughter. If The Virgin Romance Novelist is half as funny as The Mother Road, I think I am in for a real treat.

4) The Man I Love by Suanne Laqueur

Release Date: June 16th 2014

Referred by: Alex at Alleskelle Blogs but Mostly Reads and Christie at Smokin Hot Book Blog

Alex read this book a couple of months ago and raved about it on her Facebook page. Then I saw it recently in my Goodreads feed, where Christie said that it gutted her. Since I am a glutton for a good gutting, and since I trust both of their opinions immensely, The Man I Love will be read sooner rather than later.

5) Sempre by JM Darhower

Release Date: June 16th 2014

Referred by: Angela at Feeding My Addiction and Steph at Crazy World of a Book Lover

I bought this book (and it’s sequel, Sempre Redemption) on a whim during The Book Outlet’s huge Black Friday sale in November.  Recently, Angela and Steph mentioned that this is one of the best series they have ever read.  That’s pretty high praise from these ladies, so Sempre is one that I plan to read as soon as possible.

What books are on your TBR that you would love to get around to reading? What keeps you from reading books that have been on your list for a while (in my case, years)?

  • You haven’t read – Sempre?!!! Girl, you need to get on the ball! Made (a book in the series) is one of my favorite books!
AND YES READ – ON THE ISLAND!!! *muah*

    • I know, I know! How can you be friends with someone who hasn’t read 2 of your favoritest books of all time?? lol

  • I’ve only heard of Sempre from your list. I have a ton on my The Marriage Bargain, The Poughkeepsie series, finishing the Sookie Stackhouse books. And What keeps me from reading? Timing. Mood. No idea, llol!

    • Time! That’s the biggest problem for all of us, I think 😉

I’m sure your list of unread books is as long as mine. I just hope we get to finish some of the books on our super-long TBRs.

  • LOVE this list! I am excited for you to read Like Gravity and Sempre, but also On The Island — LOVED that book, too!
I too, have THE MAN I LOVE BY SUANNE LAQUEUR on my list! Maybe we can do a BR?
Books are like gasoline, they fuel me. The problem is I have 90+ books sitting on my Kindle. Each time a friend loves a book, I buy it. Each time my fave author writes a book, I buy it. I just have a hard time getting around to reading them.
    hmmm… my short list…
    1. Sebring, Kristen Ashley – because I LOVE Kristen Ashley and haven’t read this, yet.
    2. Golden Dynasty, Kristen Ashley (Recommended by Lana at Dirty Girl Romance)
    3. True Love Way, Mary Elizabeth (Recommended by Christy at Book Babes Unite)
    4. Loving the White Liar – So many good reviews (Recommended by
    5. Dissident (Bellator Saga #1) – I have wanted to read this series since I was first contacted by the author, but haven’t had time. Now, a couple of friends tell me, I NEED to read it.

    • Yes, let’s do a buddy read! I would love that!!

I have a similar problem as you….I read one book for every 3 or 4 that I buy.

You have an awesome TBR list! Although, I haven’t read any of them. lol

  • I love the idea of this post! I do a terrible job getting to backlist books of new authors I discover or books recommended by friends. I think that prioritizing them like this would help me actually get to at least a few of them 🙂

    • Thanks for commenting, Katie! I usually do a horrible job of remembering book recommendations from friends and bloggers, but I have decided to change that this year.

I have made a ‘Friend Recs’ shelf on GR, and I have a spreadsheet (geeky, I know!) that I am using to keep track of the books I want to read in the near future. If I don’t write them down, they are ‘out of sight, out of mind’ for me.
