Have you ever felt a sense of letdown after the busyness of the holidays and all of the celebrations are over? Well, in my case, that turns into weeks of ‘hibernation mode’ and becoming a recluse in order to fully recover.
Unfortunately, that also means that my blogging has been sporadic at best over the last couple of months and I apologize for that.
Truth be told, I’ve had this post in my drafts for a month and it’s waaaay past the time to shake off this post-holiday funk and finally start getting back on track.
So, I thought it would be fun to review 2017 and explain why I decided to change my blog name from Night Owl Reader to Totally Bex.
I could also use your help with a survey if have five minutes to spare.
Looking back on 2017
While I know that most bloggers post their year-in-review at the end of December/first of January, let’s just pretend that my new year starts on February 1st instead.
In fact, I saw this on Instagram yesterday, so I know I’m not the only one who feels that way!
2017 was my busiest year yet, but it was also a time of personal growth, business expansion, fun places to visit, and making personal connections with other bloggers.
In addition to reading and reviewing books, I added proofreading and editing services to my plate, I worked as a personal assistant for an awesome indie romance author, and I also opened Pink Parfait Literary Goods with my amazing friend, Eliza, from Relentless Romance (we have a new collection coming next week!).
2017 was also the ‘year of travel’ for us, both individually and as a family.
I was lucky enough to attend several signings, including Cleveland, Lexington, and New York City. I got to meet so many long-admired authors and lovely friends from the book community at each one.
My family and I also traveled to Hilton Head Island, Charleston, Atlanta, and Colonial Williamsburg. The best part, though, was that I got to tag along with my husband on a couple of work-related trips. We left the kids at grandma’s and went to Las Vegas and London, England.
We had the best time in London and I’m still dreaming of relocating our family for a work assignment through my husband’s company. Just a year or two — that’s not asking too much, right?
Why I Changed My Blog Name
As you know by now, I made the decision to change my blog name in November and I thought I would take a moment to explain why I made the change.
I started Night Owl Reader in January of 2015 and it was kind of a spur-of-the-moment decision. I knew I wanted to start a book blog but didn’t have a name in mind. (I swear, it’s like naming a baby — so tough, y’all!). I felt impulsive one night and bought the domain before I overthought the choice. (I tend to be an overthinker, by the way.)
Anyway, after blogging for two and a half years, I started to get into a groove… and then one day that groove started feeling more like a rut.
I still loved reading books (ALWAYS!), but my reviews were starting to sound repetitive and I was feeling uninspired. I also felt confined by the name, so it was time to shift gears. And what better way to clear the slate and get reenergized than to change your blog name and branding?
So, Totally Bex was born.
I’m still working on updating all of the old posts and changing the layout a bit, so I appreciate your patience while I work on adding new features and graphics.
In case you haven’t guessed, I plan to add a more of my personality, my life, and the things I love into posts that go beyond reviews.
I also want to start helping other bloggers get started since I’ve built up a fair bit of knowledge in my years of blogging (I had a crafty blog before starting my book blog, so it’s been about 6 years in total).
Finally, I plan to explore different ways to simplify, relax, stress less while finding more time for reading and other hobbies. Sound good?
Oh, and I’m also relaunching my newsletter as the “Totally Love ‘Letter”, so if you want to make sure you don’t miss anything, sign up here:
Now here’s where you come in! I’ve put together my first-ever reader survey and I want to hear your thoughts. What you like, what you don’t like, what I can help you with this year.
I want to know what you want to see on Totally Bex and if there is something I can create or offer that will help you as a reader, a blogger, or an author.
