#FiveOnFriday: Most Anticipated New Romance Releases for May 2017

#FiveOnFriday is an original, weekly feature on NightOwlReader.com.  Each week I talk about favorite books, anticipated reads, and other bookish topics.  Enjoy!

Are you ready for a new month that chock-full of awesome new releases?  I know I am!   I haven’t had as much time as usual to read, so my reading average is suffering this year.  I am hoping that with all of the books on the schedule for May, I finally start to catch up on my stats.

This month is fantastic for exciting reads, so without further ado…

Here are my most anticipated new romances for May!

"There will be a battle, and you will need to protect your heart."

Kjell of Jeru had always known who he was. He'd never envied his brother or wanted to be king. He was the bastard son of the late King Zoltev and a servant girl, and the ignominy of his birth had never bothered him.

But there is more to a man than his parentage. More to a man than his blade, his size, or his skills, and all that Kjell once knew has shifted and changed. He is no longer simply Kjell of Jeru, a warrior defending the crown. Now he is a healer, one of the Gifted, and a man completely at odds with his power.

Called upon to rid the country of the last vestiges of the Volgar, Kjell stumbles upon a woman who has troubling glimpses of the future and no memory of the past. Armed with his unwanted gift and haunted by regret, Kjell becomes a reluctant savior, beset by old enemies and new expectations. With the woman by his side, Kjell embarks upon a journey where the greatest test may be finding the man she believes him to be.

Amy Harmon created the most extraordinary fantasy world in The Bird and the Sword (read my 5-star review) and I can’t wait to go back to Jeru for Kjell’s story.  Even if you do not read a lot of books in the fantasy genre (I’m not a huge fan myself), I can’t recommend this series enough.  As always, Amy’s writing is phenomenal, the characters are amazing, and it may just make you change your mind about fantasy.

Let’s be honest, ladies. A good man is a lot like the perfect car. You want a hot body, an engine that purrs, and superior performance under the hood...for the best joy ride of your life.

I’m at your service. Ready to go all night long.

But then a wildly sexy brunette appears in my life and throws a wrench in all my plans. She’s fiery, she’s talented, she’s gorgeous, and I’d really like to know what makes her engine hum.

Henley also happens to be my biggest rival, and now we’re forced to work together every day on the most important custom car build of my career. The trouble is I can’t quite figure out if she wants to kick me in the lug nuts or beg me to give her a good, hard fuel injection. Until one night that question is answered on the hood of a sports car when she calls out my name three times. And we can’t seem to put on the brakes.

If sleeping with the enemy is a bad idea, how much more dangerous would it be to fall in love with her?

After reading–and loving–Chase’s story in Full Package (read my review 5-star review), I couldn’t wait to learn more about his brother, Max.  The hints that were given about his upcoming story were enough to whet my appetite and make me count down the days until his book finally arrived.  Well, the wait is almost over and I am so excited to read it.  In fact, the rivals-to-lovers vibe sounds right up my alley!

Ruby Scott is months behind on rent and can't seem to land a steady job. She has one chance to turn things around with a big audition. But instead of getting her big break, she gets sick as a dog and completely bombs it in the most humiliating fashion. All thanks to a mysterious, gorgeous guy who kissed--and then coughed on--her at a party the night before.

Luckily, her best friend might have found the perfect opportunity; a job staying at the lavish penthouse apartment of hotel magnate Bancroft Mills while he's out of town, taking care of his exotic pets. But when the newly-evicted Ruby arrives to meet her new employer, it turns out Bane is the same guy who got her sick.

Seeing his role in Ruby's dilemma, Bane offers her a permanent job as his live-in pet sitter until she can get back on her feet. Filled with hilariously awkward encounters and enough sexual tension to heat a New York City block, Shacking Up, from NYT and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting, is sure to keep you laughing and swooning all night long.

Helena Hunting has knocked it out of the park with her Pucked series (especially the last three books), so I am very curious to see what she will do with a fresh set of characters.  While I hope she is planning to give us more of the hockey heroes, I think I’m ready for some new swoon-worthy and awkward situations in a new setting.

#FiveOnFriday: Most Anticipated New Romance Releases | May 2017Dating-ish by Penny Reid

There are three things you need to know about Marie Harris:
1) She’s fed up with online dating,
2) She’s so fed up, she’s willing to forego the annoyance and consider more creative alternatives, and
3) She knows how to knit.

After the most bizarre and irritating first date in the history of human kind, Marie is looking for an alternative to men. With the help of her friends, she quickly identifies a few possibilities:

Need a cuddle? Use a professional cuddler. Need affirmation? Get yourself a life coach. Need an orgasm? Try orgasm meditation! Why does she need the hassle of a romantic partner when she can meet all her needs with paid services?
But then her irritating date resurfaces. And he’s not at all the person she thought he was. And he suggests a different—and crazier—solution to her dilemma . . .
As everyone knows (or will soon come to realize), traditional relations between humans are a thing of the past. Robots are our future. And if robots are our future, then why do we need other people at all?

The long-awaited sixth book in the Knitting in the City series is almost here and it sounds so unique.  AI loving and professional cuddlers?  I need to know how all of this works!  If anyone can pull it off, though, it’s Penny Reid.  I am confident that it will be as intelligent and educational, not to mention entertaining, as the rest of the books I have read by her.

Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley's team decides it's time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he's settled down.

Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of "normal." Under ordinary circumstances she'd never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn't have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley's team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley's a shallow, self-centered jerk? It's not like they're going to fall for each other in real life…right?

After devouring the addictive Royals series by Erin Watt, I am looking forward to reading more from them.  I know it is a YA rock-star romance, but I think it will be a nice change of pace from what I have been reading lately.  I just hope that my expectations aren’t too high.

Here are a few more notable new releases in May!
