After finishing The Last Piece of His Heart, I am reminded that every once in a while, you read a book that grabs ahold of your heart from the very first page and doesn’t let go.
I always seem to forget that when you read an Emma Scott book, you’re guaranteed to be drawn into the story and the lives of her characters, to feel a gamut of emotions and take a punch to the heart.
If you read The Girl in the Love Song (and if you haven’t you must!), you were introduced to The Lost Boys and their ragtag group of friends who become a chosen family.
Ronan is the epitome of a lost boy. He was in the foster system for ten years and when a relative is finally found, he moves to Santa Cruz as an 18-year-old high school senior.
Life has been anything but easy for Ronan. Traumatized by the death of his mother at a young age, Ronan blames himself for not preventing the tragedy.
Shiloh is a type-A personality who appears to have it all together. She creates amazing jewelry and plans to open her own shop in a few years.
Shiloh has plans and love, marriage, and kids don’t fit into the equation. Thanks to her absentee mother and an unknown father, Shiloh hides just how lost and lonely she is.
On paper, Ronan and Shiloh are total opposites, but they have undeniable chemistry and attraction.
Ronan has a protective streak a mile wide, so he struggles to both have Shiloh in his life and to keep her safe. Shiloh is fiercely independent, but she also just wants to be loved and wanted.
It’s a juxtaposition that shouldn’t work, but it truly does in this story.
While their lives are so different, Shiloh and Ronan are amazing together. Neither believes that they need to rely on anyone for help, so to see them open up and be vulnerable while learning to trust one another is truly beautiful to watch.
This book (and series) will break your heart with the traumas and injustices that happen to these characters. Emma Scott handles delicate situations with the utmost care in a way that only she can write while exploring topics not often seen in romance books.
The Last Piece of His Heart is one of the best books I have read this year and a truly phenomenal story.
It’s the best ending to an epic series and I truly can’t recommend this series more!
Thank you for the advanced copy of THE LAST PIECE OF HIS HEART by Emma Scott. All opinions are my own.

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys…
Ronan Wentz has been to hell and back, and he carries the scars to prove it. Worse, the blood of a monster runs through his veins. After ten years in foster care, eighteen-year-old Ronan is finally reunited with family. His uncle gives him a roof over his head and puts him to work, managing a shabby apartment complex in Santa Cruz, California.
But a second chance is still a second chance. Ronan becomes a solitary hunter, a vigilante, walking the streets at night to keep the nightmares at bay. If he can use the anger burning in his tainted blood to protect instead of hurt, maybe then he’ll find the absolution he seeks.
Then he meets Shiloh.
Shiloh Barrera looks like she has it all together. Smart, ambitious, and full of artistic creativity she channels into making beautiful one-of-a kind jewelry. But Shiloh’s cool, capable demeanor is a front. Her demons drive her to succeed as much as her ambition—to prove her worth to the mother who can’t stand to look at her, and who’s harboring secrets of her own.
When Shiloh and Ronan meet, the physical attraction is instant and scorching. Neither believes it will last. Falling in love is an impossible pipe dream saved for those less shattered and damaged than they are.
But as hard as they try to resist, the growing feelings between them seem inevitable… until one terrible night destroys Shiloh’s dreams and Ronan’s future. When the smoke clears, and the rubble settles, they’ll have to choose – do their pasts determine their future, or can they build a new one from the broken pieces of their hearts?
