Review of Homecoming King

Delightfully quirky and thoroughly charming, Homecoming King is an absolute joy to read.

Penny Reid nails unique takes on traditional tropes like marriage of convenience, fake dating, friends to lovers, slow burn, sports romance—and the best part is that they are all packed into one glorious package that is Homecoming King!

Homecoming King Summary

Abby is a bartender in Texas with a big, kind heart, but it has taken a beating after trusting the wrong man with both it and her finances.  It has taken years, but she’s finally starting to recover from the loss and not really looking for a relationship—that is until the literal star of all of her fantasies walks into her bar.

Rex is a professional football player who literally stumbles back into Abby’s life.  What Rex doesn’t know is that he and Abby grew up in the same town, went to school together, and her crush on him was a near-obsession.  He’s also unlucky in love, and he’s usually considered a starter boyfriend for every woman he dates.

After a rough reintroduction, one thing leads to another and Rex comes up with a proposition too good for Abby to refuse.

Friends to Lovers Slow Burn Romance

Let me just say, Rex is prime book boyfriend material.  Not only is he grumpy and gruff, he’s sweet, swoony, and sexy. His relationship with Abby is adorable and she helps him show his vulnerable side without judgment.

Abby and Rex have amazing chemistry that sizzles on the page, and their banter is amazingly witty.  I enjoyed watching their progression from friends to more, both learning to trust the other and falling in love along the way.

I’m always excited to get a new series from Penny and Homecoming King is the perfect start to this one.  Here’s to hoping that Cyrus gets his happy ending in the next one.

While this is a holiday-oriented novel, I wouldn’t consider it a holiday romance—meaning, you shouldn’t wait until December to read it.  In fact, I think you should read it right now.  Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Thank you for the advanced copy of HOMECOMING KING by Penny Reid.  All opinions are my own.

Delightfully quirky and thoroughly charming, Homecoming King by Penny Reid (Three Kings Book 1) is an absolute joy to read and a fantastic first book to a new series!

Rex “TW” McMurtry’s perpetual single-hood wouldn’t bother him so much if all his ex-girlfriends didn’t keep marrying the very next person they dated, especially when so many of those grooms are his closest friends. He may be a pro-football defensive end for the Chicago Squalls, but the press only wants to talk about how he’s always a groomsman and never a groom. Rex is sick of being the guy before the husband, and he’s most definitely sick of being the best man at all their weddings.

Bartender Abigail McNerny is the gal-pal, the wing-woman, the she-BFF. She’s dated. Once. And once was more than enough. Privy to all the sad stories of her customers, ‘contentment over commitment’ is her motto, and Abby is convinced no one on earth could ever entice her into a romantic relationship . . . except that one guy she’s loved since preschool.

The guy who just walked into her bar.

The guy who doesn’t recognize her.

The guy who is drunk and needs a ride home.

The guy who has a proposition she should definitely refuse.
