Grab a box of tissues, a bottle of wine, and some chocolates, because today I am bringing you my 5 favorite sad romance books that made me cry.

We’re talking ‘blubbering mess, rocking in a fetal position, don’t-ask-me-what’s-wrong-because-you-wouldn’t-understand’, kind of crying.

Grab a box of tissues, a bottle of wine, and some chocolates because this list of my all-time favorite sad romance books made me cry like a baby—I know you will, too!

These books include a once-in-a-lifetime love story, a reclusive hero/tortured love story, a complicated love story, and a beautiful love story, but every one of them has a heartbreaking story involved and are most definitely sad romance novels.

You have been warned!

5 of the Best Sad Romance Novels

1. The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons

This book…I can’t even. All I can say is, it is an epic novel with an epic love story and it absolutely gutted me.

The Bronze Horseman is so devastatingly heartbreaking and so emotionally raw that I had to stop reading several times. Not because I wanted to, but because I HAD to—I couldn’t read through all of the tears.

This book gave me a book hangover for over a week and stuck with me for a long time after.

Side note: I gave my friends copies, and they all felt the same way. Misery loves company, what can I say?

2. Making Face by Amy Harmon

Since it is September 11th (at the time of writing this post), I have to include this book.

Amy Harmon is so good at writing intricately layered, highly emotional, and thought-provoking romances.  If you haven’t read any of her books, I would definitely start with this one!

“In the days and weeks following the attacks on 9/11, life returned to normal, but it felt wrong, like a favorite shirt worn inside out—still your shirt, still recognizable, but rubbing in all the wrong places, the seams revealed, the tags hanging out, the colors dulled, the words backwards. But unlike the shirt, the sense of wrong couldn’t be righted. It was permanent, the new normal.”

Note: This book is suitable for young adult readers

3. Archer's Voice by Mia Sheridan

I have so much empathy and compassion for characters who overcome adversity and physical challenges, that I tear up no matter what happens.

I totally sobbed several times while reading this one.  At one point, I swear, my heart stopped.  Thank goodness there is a happy ending because I don’t know if I would have recovered from that.

4. If I Stay by Gayle Forman

One horrible moment changes an entire family’s lives forever.  This young adult book is such an emotional roller-coaster and I bawled like a baby through most of it.

I recently watched the movie based on this book, and it is spot-on in capturing the emotions and bringing this story to life.

My recommendation: Read the book.  Watch the movie.  Prepare to cry.

Note: This book is suitable for young adult readers

5. Slammed by Colleen Hoover

It was hard to decide just which book by Colleen Hoover to include on this list.  Pretty much anything she writes is guaranteed to make me cry at one point or another.

While reading Slammed, I remember thinking, “How much more heartbreak can one character take?” (Turns out, it was a lot.)

I highly recommend reading the second book, Point of Retreat, after reading this.  Both are bittersweet and full of sorrow.

Note: This book is suitable for young adult readers
